CARL SYMCOX: Data-Driven Wellsite Geology: FTIR, XRF, and Mudgas in Active Drilling
Modern wellsite geology is moving beyond traditional cuttings description toward real-time geochemical and mineralogical analysis that directly informs drilling decisions. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) mineralogy now allows active surveillance of clay speciation at the wellsite, giving operators an early, continuous read on wellbore stability risk as formations change downhole. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental chemostratigraphy complements this by supporting geopositioning and flagging chemical markers that sharpen geosteering, particularly in reservoirs where lithology alone is a poor guide. Mass spectrometry of mudgas has likewise expanded past conventional bit-wear (bit gas) monitoring, now also detecting fracture and fault intervals through helium anomalies and informing real-time mud-weight optimization. This talk presents case studies from active drilling programs for each technology, demonstrating how they translate into practical decisions at the rig site. Together, these tools mark a shift toward higher-resolution, data-driven wellsite geology that strengthens — rather…
