Dear FWGS membership,

We are nearing the end of our 2017-18 program year and summer is quickly approaching. May 14th will be the last luncheon of the year before we break for summer. This luncheon is special to FWGS as it hosts our annual scholarship program for students at Baylor, UT- Arlington and TCU. The three (3) selected students will present their work and then be given a scholarship check. I encourage all members to come support the students from these great Universities.

The May luncheon will also double as our election of officers for the 2018-19 program year. The society will have two open positions- Secretary and Treasurer. We have four (4) qualified candidates running to be the next leaders of the society. Please come support your colleagues and submit your vote!

Luncheons throughout the year are organized by the officers of the FWGS. The goal is to bring in quality technical talks at a professional location for members to learn and network with other geologists. Speaker travel expenses, student scholarships and administrative costs are covered by the annual membership dues, which have been $20 since at least 1994. Membership reduction combined with inflation have generated discussion of our annual dues. As such, the officers of FWGS recommend increasing the annual dues to $40 subject to a vote at our annual meeting held in May.

In accordance with the by-laws, “the rules may be amended by the majority vote of members present at any regular meeting, of which due notice of the proposed amendment has been given to members at least two weeks previously.”

I hope to see everyone at the May meeting. It has been a pleasure volunteering for FWGS!
