Title:
The DART and Hera Missions: Humanity’s First Planetary Defense Missions
Abstract:
On September 26, 2022 NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft successfully impacted a near-Earth asteroid called Dimorphos at approximately 6.0 km/s. Observations from ground-based and space-based telescopes, as well as the Italian LICIACube spacecraft carried with DART, confirmed the impact and recorded the effects. The resulting impact altered the orbit period of Dimorphos around its larger companion, Didymos, proving that the kinetic impact deflection technique is feasible to protect the Earth from hazardous asteroids. In October 2024 the European Space Agency (ESA) will launch the Hera spacecraft to investigate the Didymos system and evaluate the effects of the kinetic impact upon Dimorphos. This presentation will discuss the DART mission results, the upcoming Hera mission, and some expectations of what Hera will see at Didymos/Dimorphos.
